Reasons Self-Submitting Doesn't Work For YOU:
Submitting to casting websites isn’t rocket science. But there are a few things that are nonnegotiable when it comes to using them. And you may already know why they are not working for you. Or you may be completely lost and trying to understand why you don’t get more auditions. Either way, here are a few reasons casting websites may not be working for you.
Your Submissions on Casting Websites Aren't Timely + Consistent
Self-submitting requires consistency. And we know you are busy. Trust us, we really get it! Plus checking all those emails, logging in and out of casting websites… it can be a hassle and quite time consuming. But the only way you will get auditions from self-submissions is to submit. Again, we know, it’s not rocket science.
But it is math, meaning, when it comes to getting more auditions through online casting websites, it really is a numbers game. And the more you submit (and the sooner), the better your chance of getting more auditions.
“But I do submit consistently!”, you say. Okay, either you don’t (which can be verified through the submissions tab of your online casting profile), you need better materials, or you are submitting too late after the breakdown has been released. Actors Access recommends submitting in the first 24 hours. But really the sooner, the better. We submit all of our clients within the first 12 hours, or within a couple of hours, if they prefer.
You Need Better Materials on Your Casting Websites
At the very minimum, you need an unlimited subscription, a great headshot (ideally 2 or 3 different looks) and a complete resume. And this is just the minimum. There is much more you can do to make your casting profiles more appealing and competitive. Plus, if you don’t have an unlimited subscription, it will be far more expensive (we’re talking dollar bills) in the long run. For example, on Actors Access a single submission can cost you up to $5 while an unlimited subscription is currently just under $70 for the entire year.
Every now and then, an actor signs up for our free trial with one headshot, no resume, and without an unlimited subscription. And unfortunately, we must tell them we cannot be of service to them just yet.
Just having a resume is so so important because, even if you don’t have a lot of credits, you can at least list your training, special skills, and other experiences. There are far too many submissions on casting websites to submit without a resume. So a headshot alone just isn’t enough information. And having a reel is even better. Bonus points for breaking your reel into well-titled clips.
You Are On The Wrong Casting Websites
It’s possible the casting websites you are currently using are not the best choices for you. For example, if your goal is to do films then Casting Frontier does not serve you best. And if you want to do commercials then, while they may have some, Actors Access isn’t the strongest choice available. The casting websites you choose to invest in should be determined by your goals, not just the ones your friends use.
Once you determine which casting websites best serve your goals, try them out for a few months. Then get an idea for which one of those sites truly serve YOU. Track how many opportunities come in for someone like you. Not necessarily how many auditions you are getting, but if there are a lot of opportunities coming in for someone like you. If you are not getting audition opportunities, then there are some changes you may need to make. But after a few months, if you notice there are little to no opportunities for your type, then you know your investment may be better placed in other casting websites.
